President’s Message

Despite the many frustrations we all faced this past year with regards to the dysfunction of our federal governance process, Ocean Leadership had another very productive year in 2013 as you will see in this detailed programmatic and advocacy Year in Review.  In light of the federal government shutting down for the first time in 17 years and the several fiscal showdowns that occurred – and continue to occur – we at Ocean Leadership focused on our programs and Members and actively advocated for our field with the White House, federal agencies and on the Hill.  As we have in the past, Ocean Leadership will continue to actively enhance community engagement, striving to be the place in Washington, D.C. to come for advice on ocean science and education issues.

One area in which Ocean Leadership heavily concentrated on in 2013 is the creation of new partnerships, something I have been championing for a while now.  With the tumultuous funding environment, I feel it is important to come together as a community to advance our field.  I am quite pleased that University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) have formed mutually beneficial working partnerships with us.  They are already proving to have a positive response from the Hill and federal agencies and we are looking forward to another productive year ahead.

Overall, 2013 was a busy one for Ocean Leadership.  Our reputation and influence in ocean science and education continues to rise through our program management and advocacy activities on the Hill and with the Administration.  As we all know, there are many challenges ahead, but we are up to the task.  Thank you for continuing to read our newsletter as we strive to shape the future of ocean science and technology through discovery, understanding and action.  2014 is sure to be another eventful year – so stay tuned! I can assure you that we will do our best to keep you up to date.
