Opportunity: Director- Romberg Tiburon Center

The Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC) is the marine and estuarine research center of San Francisco State University. Its mission is to advance understanding of the world’s complex marine and estuarine environments through research, education, and outreach, with a focus on San Francisco Bay. The Center is located approximately 20 miles north of the main campus on the Tiburon Peninsula on a 34-acre waterfront parcel. The physical facilities are comprised of a number of buildings that house the main research/laboratory facility; the administrative/teaching facilities; the Bay Conference Center; the Ohrenschall Guest Center, the Marine/Technical Operations Shops, the Art Department graduate studios and a storage facility and Anthropology archives. RTC is also home to the National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Taxon Biosciences, Inc. The site offers one of the few areas in the Bay with deepwater access from the shore. RTC operates several boats used for research including a 38′ aluminum hulled vessel, the R/V Questuary, a Twin V outboard, and several Boston Whalers.  

Presently, 15 PhD level scientists (tenured/tenure-track and research faculty) and 4 postdoctoral associates lead research efforts that involve 25 research technicians and 60 masters level graduate students and represents approximately $ 30 million in grant generated funding.

Time Base: Full-Time (1.0)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $ 130,008 – $ 160,008  per year and is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary: Collaboratively lead faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement RTC’s strategic plan for ongoing excellence and future expansion.

Recruit prominent and promising faculty scholars, and support faculty in their efforts to obtain government and private grants and contracts related to the Center activities. 

Promote and represent RTC at university, community, state and federal levels.

Design and implement a strategy to raise substantial external funds for continuing site development and program enrichment. 

Direct a dynamic interdisciplinary faculty and staff; maintain collaborative relationships with the main campus and the local community.
