Last week, the FY2014 budget was completed and the federal agencies were given their budgets this week. They will be working on their spend plans over the next few weeks. As soon as the information has been released, we will be sure and update you.

Next week, I will be attending the 2014 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference in Mobile, Alabama.  With close to 900 attendees, 10 scientific sessions and 550 abstracts, the conference is sure to be an interesting one now that it has been almost four years since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  I am looking forward to hearing about the latest Gulf research and catching up with colleagues. I hope to see many of you there. I will also be presenting two students with the James D. Watkins Student Award for Excellence in Research, an award sponsored by Ocean Leadership to recognize outstanding student research. Our hope is that this award will further the legacy of Admiral Watkins and motivate students to continue to follow their passion in the field of marine science.  For more information on the conference, click here.

With the polar vortex in full effect this week across most of the country, spring seems a long way off.  Fortunately, it will be here before we know it! Have a nice weekend.
